The National Zoo of Malaysia is located in Ulu Klang, near Taman Melawati. It is located on a 110-acre piece of land and is only a short 5 kilometers from the city center. Officially opened on 14th November 1963, the National Zoo is the first ever zoo in Malaysia. Over the years, the National Zoo has evolved itself to an open concept zoo with more than 90% of its animals are kept in spacious captives with landscapes which mimics its natural habitat.

Overview

The Zoo Negara is managed by the Malaysian Zoological society which was created to start the first zoo in Malaysia. The zoo now has a total of over 5000 animal from over 450 species of birds, reptiles, mammals, fish and amphibians from all over the world. Majority of the animals here can be found locally. Thus if you would like to know more about the indigenous creatures from Malaysia, the Zoo Negara is a must visit

In the zoo itself also accommodates the Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium which has more than 130 species of aquatic creatures on display from both marine and freshwater. Other than showcasing magnificent creatures from all shapes and sizes, the zoo has for main areas which it emphasizes. They are conservation, education, recreation and research. The paths in the zoo are well planned to allow visitors to walk while enjoying the lush landscaping as well as getting a good view of the animals on display

Other more exotic exhibits are the orang utans, gibbons and the Sumatran tigers. There are also scheduled performances at the amphitheatre. The performances include shows by orang utans, sea lions and elephants. Children can also go on for camel, horse or elephant rides at the zoo.

Transport

Via public transport, there are two ways to get to the National Zoo. If by LRT, get on the Kelana Jaya Line and head towards to the Wangsa Maju Station. From there, get a taxi or a RapidKL bus number U34 and you will reach the zoo. But if you would like to take the bus there, get on the Metrobus number 16 from the Central Market, Kuala Lumpur or the RapidKL bus number U23 from the Titiwangsa Station, Kuala Lumpur.
